About

The purpose of this project was to create a building that would invite the citizens of San Antonio to be part of a new community called “local farmers”. This new location would not only serve as a Farmer’s market, but also as a school where everybody can learn the great advantages of growing crops.

CHOOSING A SITE

As part of the project, the whole class collaborated into gathering a lot of useful data that will help us decide where the ideal location of our building would be. Information such as: empty lots, parks, gathering spaces, parking lots, historic landmarks, etc; was all considered to ultimately make a final decision.
All this analysis helped us comprehend the behavior of the demographics in this given area. By doing this we understood where development is happening and where it will continue to do so.

DESIGNING WITH RIBS

One of the requirements of the project was to explore the idea of spaces created by the intersection of planes. Humans navigate through planes all the time, planes like walls, openings, stepping from one material to the other, crossing through the flow of people, etc. So even though these planes are not necessarily solid or physical, we understand when we step into them or we cross them.
This is the idea we had to analyze and that will hopefully enable us to design a building in a space that would be intersected by planes that come in different directions.

ANALYZING PEOPLE'S FLOW

The particular shape of the lot and the unique placement of this building withing the block presented a challenge on how to orient the building. Given those aspects it was clear that people would be approaching the building from different points, which is how the angle walls started to shape the volume of the building.
The converging paths helped define the very distinct walls of this building; Appearing to directly react to how people will move once the market opens

FLOOR PLANS

The floor plans below show how this institution is laid out. This facility counts with great spaces that will help the students make their experience here unforgettable. Two indoor typical classrooms, One outdoor classroom, two full culinary classrooms/ kitchens, indoor and outdoor break room, and on top of that a restaurant that takes advantage of the fully functional greenhouse and local produce.

THE ADVANTAGES OF LOCAL PRODUCE

Locally grown food just tastes better. The fruits and vegetables are collected at their best state and transported that same day to the market. Produce like this spends far less time being transported or stored which means that there is practically no need for preservatives. In addition, local food supports local

businesses, which means that prices are directly cut down because there is no need for long transportations costs, packaging, storage etc. On top of that, there is something unique about getting to know the person that is supplying you the ingredients of the food you are feeding to your family.

A series of 3D printed models show the progression of the greenhouse design. Here it is very easy to see how its complex shape evolved through a series of twists and pulls.
